Each year the Science Alliance contributes seed and matching funds to new research ideas and instrumentation, annual programs for students, and conferences that fall within the scope of its mission.
In FY08 the Science Alliance began to focus on providing institutional funding and support for ever larger multi-institutional and interdisciplinary-team research projects. In 2009, that strategic shift proved timely and the center made especially impressive strides in response to the calls for funding made possible by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Altogether, Science Alliance proposal development and grant writing teams provided support for grant applications valued at nearly $130 million.
Science Alliamce supports research ventures that expand the work of an ORNL Seed Money project.
The Science Alliance helps purchase and operate instrumentation that builds research infrastructure, such as UT's Affymetrix microarray system.
The University of Tennessee and Science Alliance are in a position to take advantage of the opportunity presented by the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to help the nation deal with its energy problem. For two years the Science Alliance has contributed to UTK Sustainable Energy Education Research Center (SEERC) projects. Science Alliance support for the STAIR project also falls into this category (more about STAIR on the Ventures: Support for Students page).
The Science Alliance support for students focuses on graduate education and research. Our programs emphasize both the preparation of undergraduates for a graduate education and direct financial support to programs with extensive collaborations ORNL science and engineering.
The Science Alliance contributes to conferences that fall within the scope of its mission. As in several years past the center again contributed to the UT-ORNL-KBRIN Bioinformatics Summit.
