Joint Institute for Heavy Ion Research Photo Gallery
(A double click on some photos in the gallery will load a larger view with higher resolution.)
JIHIR is composed of two buildings: the structure on the left was constructed in 1982 by ORNL; the building on the right was constructed in 1984 by the state of Tennessee.
JIHIR was dedicated in 1984. Attendees shown are Joe LaGrone (head of DOE in Oak Ridge), Joe Wyatt (Vanderbilt chancellor), Glenn Seaborg (Nobel laureate and keynote speaker), Joe Hamilton (Vanderbilt), Herman Postma (ORNL director), Marilyn Lloyd (U.S. Congress), Jack Reese (UT Knoxville chancellor), Ed Boling (University of Tennessee president), and Jim Leiss (Department of Energy).

The first JIHIR Policy Council at the dedication in 1984: Lee Riedinger (UT), Russell Robinson (ORNL), and Joe Hamilton (Vanderbilt).
JIHIR played a leadership role in the construction of the Recoil Mass Spectrometer, an instrument that is now a critical part of HRIBF. Shown here are leaders in the RMS project in 1995: J.J. Das, Tom Ginter, Paul Mantica, and Joe Hamilton.
A conference marked the 10th anniversary of JIHIR in 1991. Shown are Professor Joe Hamilton of Vanderbilt, Jim Ball (director of the ORNL Physics Division), Joe Johnson (president of the University of Tennessee), Vickie Nance (Senator Sasser’s office), and Professor Lee Riedinger of the University of Tennessee.

Left to right: Joe Hamilton (Vanderbilt), Jim Ball (ORNL), Al Trivelpiece (ORNL director), Russell Robinson (ORNL), Joe Johnson (UT president), Vickie Nance (Senator Sasser’s office), Tim Thompson (staff of Governor McWherter), Martha Wallus (Rep. Lloyd staff), Tennessee Representative Bill Purcell, Lee Riedinger (UT), Senator Douglas Henry, Ken Carter (ORAU), and Gene Spejewski (UNISOR director).
The Joint Institute for Heavy Ion Research is a joint project of The University of Tennessee, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Vanderbilt University.
